Cemetery Orb
Cemetery Orb
Portsmouth, New Hampshire (2008): Okay, I almost always ignore 'orbs', as all paranormal investigators should. However, this is a rare daylight orb, taken in an old, out-of-the-way family cemetery that is now part of a nature preserve. I took many shots, with nothing unusual appearing. I then asked the 'residents' if I could photograph them, and immediately obtained this shot. I first thought it was the diaphragm of the camera lens, but due to the conditions and upon closer inspection, that does not appear to be the case. I was unable to recreate the photo. Taken with a Fujifilm FinePix E550 camera, which I have found to be more sensitive to the UV and IR spectra due to its unique sensor and less aggressive filtration. It must be noted that some examples of the generation of Fuji's Super CCD sensor used in this camera have been known to have a 'hot' pixel defect. However, in my years of using this camera, this is the only such anomaly I've encountered.

Salem, Massachusetts (2010): Taken at the Old Burial Ground in Salem. Notice the stone second row from the bottom, on the right. I didn't notice it at the time, which often happens in paranormal investigation. I was blown-away when I later reviewed the photos. I returned a week later under similiar conditions (time of day, weather) but was unable to recreate the image. Taken with the Moditronic Deep Infrared camera.

Civil War Union Camp

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (2009): This is like one of those puzzles where you have to find the hidden objects. This photograph was taken at an overgrown site that was, according to a plaque, occupied by a New York regiment. Look closely, then I'll break it down in to sections. This shot, unlike others in the series, took on an almost dream-like quality which I could not recreate. Could it be that we were allowed a glimpse of a scene from 150 years ago? Taken with the Moditronic Deep Infrared camera.
Ghost Soldier?
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (2009): A crop from the lower right section of the above photograph. The outline of a soldier sitting on the ground (torso and arms) can be seen. Can he be leaning against a tree or log that's no longer there? Some will say it's a trick of shadow and light, digital 'smearing' or simply apophenia, but not paranormal. However, the entire image was a faint transparency over the scene as it appears today.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (2009): A crop from the center-left section of the photograph. I find it curious that all "ghost" images in the scene are directly related to the history of the location.

Female Ghost?
Female Ghost?
St. Augustine, Florida (2008): This photo was taken looking down the staircase of the infamous St. Augustine lighthouse. It was a weekday afternoon with very few visitors. I saw a "blur" zoom down the stairs, and immediately started snapping the shutter. As it happened so quickly, I couldn't identify it, but did get the impression of a woman. What appears to be long, flowing blonde hair appeared in the edge of one of the shots. Taken with the Spectercam "Full Spectrum" UV/IR camcorder in still photo mode.

Apparition on USS The Sullivans (DD-537)?
Apparition on USS The Sullivans (DD-537)?
Buffalo, New York (2012): While I avoid posting photographic or audio 'evidence' taken by others on this site, this photo was sent to me for analysis by Saralin Mangialino-Rivera, and I thought it was too good for the world not to see. It appears here with her kind permission. The image was taken aboard USS The Sullivans (DD-537), a Fletcher Class Destroyer, which is permanently docked at the Buffalo Naval Park, on Friday, October 19, 2012 at 10:56 am. Look closely at the area above the shower curtain. Ms. Mangialino-Rivera stated to me that she "felt" something was there, and quickly snapped the photo with her iPhone 4. If you look even more closely, you can see what appears to be handwritten numbers in the apparition. Perhaps the sailor's serial number? This is a very odd and eerie image, and a perfect example of not needing high-tech 'ghost' cameras to capture anomalies. The best camera to photograph ghosts really is the one you happen to have with you!

Calling All Angels?
Calling All Angels?
Chelsea, Massachusetts (2012): Yes, I know I said that I almost always ignore 'orbs', but this is one of 170 photos taken inside Chelsea Spanish Church of God on December 15, 2012 during a group baptism. None of the other shots revealed anything unusual. However, as soon as the priest asked aloud for the "angels to come and bless the children", I took this one. Make of it what you will. Taken with the Pentax K100D Super Digital SLR Camera and Pentax AF-200FG Dedicated Flash, the combination is not prone to false dust orb anomalies as are compact digital cameras. This camera is also known to be more sensitive to the infrared spectra than are most.

Fire Pit Visitor?
Fire Pit Visitor?
Massachusetts (2012): This image, taken with a cell phone camera, was kindly sent to me by a reader of this website. He claimed at the time that he had just taken it, did not see it at the time, and that no manipulation was done. I have no reason to believe that he was anything but sincere and, while not 100% reliable, the EXIF data, as well as my analysis, back up his statement. Readers of this site know I am not a believer in demons, but I must say that this is a very interesting photo. Is it paranormal? Probably not; more likely a chance shot aided by the slower shutter speed of his camera phone. That being said, you would have a better chance of winning the lottery than capturing something like this. A truly unique (albeit somewhat disturbing) image.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
Location/Date Unknown: This older Polaroid instant photograph, probably from the 1970s or 80s, taken at a family dinner party, was sent in by a reader. He claimed that the red 'thing' at the bottom of the photograph was not visible on the table at the time it was taken, only appearing in the photograph. While there is no EXIF data available as Polaroid was an analog format, due to the nature of the process, they were very difficult to manipulate or intentionally fake. Editing: Cropping to conceal identities, minor enhancement to restore color, contrast and sharpness inherently lacking in older Polaroid emulsions.

Still Committed?
Belchertown, Massachusetts (2015): Belchertown State School was, by all accounts, a hideous place. Opened in 1922 to house mentally disabled children, reports of abuse and neglect continued until its closing in 1992. This photograph, taken with an Apple iPhone 5s, was sent in by an urban explorer investigating the location, and is presented here with her kind permission. Notice the figure in the open doorway in the upper right corner of the image.

Belchertown, Massachusetts (2015): Closest enlargement of the above image. The person who sent this image in also sent another that was taken immediately after this image. While not as clear (which is why I do not present it here), it does seem to show the same image in the doorway, only the figure appears to be standing in a slightly different position.

It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's Neither...
It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's Neither...
Gloucester, Massachusetts (2015): I'll let you in on a secret: Stage Fort Park is a unique, but little known, paranormal hot spot. It's unique in that it is located in Essex County which is, without a doubt, the most 'active' area, not only in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, but in all of New England. Yes, even more so than Massachusetts' infamous "Bridgewater Triangle". Stage Fort Park is the perfect paranormal storm of sorts due to its rich combination and intersection of history and location. The first Massachusetts Bay Colony settlers landed here in 1623. It is on the shore of Gloucester Bay, where countless men over the centuries lost their lives fishing and navigating its treacherous waters. The ground is rich with Native American history. It certainly benefits from the paranormal "water amplification" theory. And it is on an approach path to Boston's Logan International Airport, about 10 miles to the South. Huh? What's the airport got to do with it? The answer: UFOs. Some locations, due to a convergence of factors, are undeniably paranormal magnets. Stage Fort Park is such a location. It is my experience that such locations attract, not only ghosts, but all types of phenomena. UFO activity is frequently sighted near major airports and, if air traffic controllers and pilots could talk without fear of reprisal, their stories would likely shock you. The picture was taken with a Nikon N75 SLR with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens. The film was Ferrania Solaris FG Plus 100, which is no longer made, but I found to have a unique spectral response in the way it records various wavelengths of light, enabling it to 'see' what other films cannot. For that reason, I have several unexposed rolls in frozen storage to use on investigations. Notice the black 'spot' in the center sky of this photograph. I didn't notice it at the time the shot was taken, which is often the case with these types of things. Film processed and scanned by my friends at The Darkroom, San Clemente, California. Now, let's look closer...
